ASW New Staff for 2017-2018

It’s a pleasure to announce our completed recruiting for the 2017-2018 school year.  The following individuals will be joining us in a year that is seeing tremendous stability in our teaching ranks with the vast majority of our staff returning next year.  Only eight new staff with tremendous experience in the international and educational community will become part of the ASW family starting in August.  As always, we look forward to preparing them for their transition and welcoming them on arrival in the Fall.

James Young – Director of Finance & Operations

With thanks to the selection committee and all staff and community members involved in our final interview process, we are pleased to announce the selection of James B. Young as our new Director of Finance and Operations.  Jim hails originally from New York, but has lived and worked in Poland since 1996.  First as an auditor for KPMG, and then as CFO for Biznes Polska Sp. z o. O., and more recently, as CFO for Ogilvy & Mather, Poland, Jim joins us this summer.  We also welcome his wife Magda and children, Julia, Maja and Liam to our ASW community.

Bart Kryger – Middle School Vice Principal

A wonderful welcome to Mr. Bart Kryger, our new Vice Principal at the Middle School.  Mr. Kryger was announced recently to the Faculty and Board of Trustees as our selection for Middle School Vice Principal.  Mr. Kryger comes originally from Washington State, having his BA from Washington State University in music education.  His background is in choral music, including time in Washington and in Shanghai, China.  He completed his Masters Degree at University of Phoenix and his administrative program through the University of Washington, Tacoma program.  He has been the Assistant Principal at Narrows View Intermediate School since 2013 in the prestigious University Place School District in Tacoma, Washington.  Bart also has credentials in the International Baccalaureate in both the PYP and MYP programmes.  He is accompanied by his wife Lucia and their two elementary aged children.

Crystal Litz – ES Teacher – Grade 2

Crystal has been working since 2013 in Canadian International School in Singapore as Senior Kindergarten Classroom Teacher. Having more than 10 year of professional experience in education she has a strong PYP background. Crystal will join ASW together with her husband, Brent, and their 2-year old daughter, Willow.

Emily Zurfluh – ES Teacher – Grade 1

Emily, after subbing last semester in Grade 3, during Dana’ maternity leave, will join us in a permanent role starting in the fall in the lower grades. Emily has more than 9 years of experience in elementary education between Shanghai Community International School and the Anglo-American School of Moscow, where she helped rewrite the Early Childhood Program of Inquiry for the PYP while teaching Kindergarten. She graduated originally from ZhongShan University in Guangzhou, China and then completed an Associate’s Degree at Pierce College in Early Childhood. Her second Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with Washington State Teacher’s Certification is from Western Governors University.

Nina Martens – ES Teacher – Grade 4

Nina comes to us with more than 20 years of experience working in many countries, having strong experience in PYP training and implementation. She joins the ASW family together with her husband Richard and daughter Grete.  Nina’s credentials includes a graduate degree from University of Alabama with a Masters in Elementary Education.  

Valerie Navarro – MS Spanish/French

Valerie is a teacher with more than 30 years of experience both in US and internationally. Originally a long time native of Tacoma, Washington, she is currently at the Anglo-American School of Moscow teaching Spanish and French. She graduated originally from the University of Washington with a Washington State teaching certificate. She completed her Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Cultural Studies at the Union Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio. She has strong knowledge and experience in the IB program at both MS and HS levels.

Brent Chisholm – MS PE Teacher

With more than 10 years of experience in education, Brent is currently Head of Department – Physical Education for Primary School at Canadian International School in Singapore. Having broad experience in aligning and integrating school Physical Education standards with IB PYP units and scope and sequence, Brent is coming to ASW with his wife, Crystal, and daughter, Willow.

Richard Martens – HS Math Teacher

Richard has been teaching overseas as a Math teacher since 1991. He has broad experience in math education: IBDP at all levels, MYP, & IGCSE. Since 2013 he has been working at Copenhagen International School.  Richard comes to ASW with wife, Nina, and daughter, Grete.

Tami Ranado – HS English IB

Tami has 9 years of experience as an English Teacher and her experience includes the American International School of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, where she was both AP English Literature and Composition Teacher for grades 9 , 11, 12 and Head of Department. She graduated from State University of New York at Brockport, Brockport, New York with a Bachelor of Science. In 1999 she received her Master’s Degree at George Mason University, Fairfax, with a Virginia Secondary Education: Curriculum and Instruction/English Endorsement.

Kristina Krohn – ES Learning Support

Kristina graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a B.A. in Elementary Education, and from the University of Kansas with an M.S. in Special Education.  She has more than 18 years of experience in Elementary Education, as a classroom teacher, Learning Support teacher, and Literacy Interventionist. Currently, she is at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in New Mexico as the Special Education Literacy Interventionist/Literacy Processing Specialist for Grades 1-5.
